Weeks Bay Pitcher Plant Bog is a research and educational reserve open to the public at no charge. A boardwalk meanders through the wetlands and out to Fish River which empties into Weeks Bay. This past week I made three trips out to the bog. I am anxiously awaiting the hundreds of butterflies that find their way to the bog each year. With all the different plants and flowers things change rapidly so going often is beneficial if you are looking for something new. This past winter I challenged myself to take interesting photographs at the bog when everything just looked brown. I think I was successful and now it's interesting to match the dried winter version of a plant to the green and vibrant ones now. This week the bog sported a large crop of healthy banana spiders. They are quite large but don't let them scare you. They are harmless and way scarier looking than they actually are. I've seen grown men run screaming from them but I don't think they would hurt anything other than a fly! I did manage to photograph a couple of butterflies but I'm waiting for the hordes of them.
