I’d heard about the Butterfly Pavilion but never had gone. This trip to Denver I decided it was definitely on my list of things to do. With my zoom lens I should be in good shape for getting good photographs of the butterflies. One concern I had was the high humidity in the tropical conservatory but I realized that shooting outdoors in south Alabama during the summer was probably as humid a proposition as I would come across and I do that without harming my camera!
Going into the tropical conservatory the first time was really a WOW experience. It was amazing! I stood with my mouth open for awhile I’m sure. There were hundreds of beautiful, multi-colored butterflies of all sizes everywhere. They flew around us, landed on us and were on all the trees and flowers in the conservatory. They were even covering the walls! I began to start shooting and realized it was going to be a lot more difficult to get good results than I’d anticipated. Tripods were not allowed and even if they had been, it would have been impossible with all the people in there. The lighting was very contrasty—bright light and dark shadows. I ended up spending about 3 hours taking pictures and I hope you enjoy seeing some of them. It was a wonderful morning of beautiful sights unlike anything I’ve seen before.
