Alabama Point is located near the Alabama/Florida border along the Gulf of Mexico. It has always been my favorite spot at the beach; one side of the point is calm water on Perdido Pass and the other side is on the Gulf with its waves. I had avoided the beach until recently. I wore out my camera's shutter release and decided to upgrade a bit. The new camera body is "weather sealed" to some extent so I thought I'd be brave and try it out down there. I've made several trips to shoot along the water and so far so good. I realize now how much I've been missing! I always like shooting early in the morning and that is the case with these. On two trips the skies were overcast and on my last trip down there it was sunny. I was afraid I would have trouble with the sun and sand but it was not a problem. In fact, I think it really added a nice, soft contrast.
There is a series of three shots that I just lucked into. You'll know them when you see them! A willet had been fishing for his breakfast when along came a seagull and snatched it away from him. The willet put up a fight but he was no match for the much larger (and meaner) gull. I was walking along the waterline when this took place and I didn't have time to check my settings. I was thrilled when I got home and saw the shots turned out well.
On the last trip I spent two hours covering a fairly short distance. The Great Blue herons were out that day and I took my time slowly inching toward them. I was able to get some great shots of two of them. Even a sand crab let me get pretty close. Sit back and enjoy the peaceful walk along the beach.
